Could I really be pregnant?
We used protection. How did this happen?

Will my partner support me?
What will my friends and family think about me?
How am I going to continue school or accomplish my goals?

If you’re worried about being pregnant, you’re likely filled with questions and difficult emotions. Struggling with an unplanned pregnancy is understandable. However, knowing if you’re pregnant is the first step to finding clarity and a way to move forward.

While pregnancy testing and a follow-up ultrasound are the only ways to know for sure if you’re pregnant, there are also early symptoms to look for that may provide a clue as to whether you’re pregnant.

Early Symptoms of Pregnancy

During pregnancy, your body is flooded with a unique mixture of hormones that tell your body to stop menstruating and instead prepare to sustain a pregnancy. While a missed period is often the first sign of pregnancy, these early pregnancy hormones can cause other symptoms that might include:

  • Tender, swollen breasts
  • Nausea, with/without vomiting
  • Increased urination
  • Fatigue
  • Food aversions or cravings
  • Moodiness
  • Bloating
  • Light spotting
  • Cramping

If you’re having any of these symptoms, it’s critical to take a pregnancy test. Other health conditions can mimic early pregnancy symptoms (and so can an impending period!).

However, it’s also important to note that some women don’t have any early pregnancy symptoms. Testing is still essential if you’ve missed a period but aren’t having other early symptoms.
