Any time a woman discovers she’s pregnant, getting as much information as possible about the pregnancy is essential. The best way to obtain the information you need is through an ultrasound.
It’s a perfect way to safeguard your health and help you understand your options.
Thankfully, True Women’s Center offers a no-cost, confidential limited ultrasound if you’ve received a positive pregnancy test at our center.
Is Ultrasound Safe?
An ultrasound is a tool doctors use to view your body’s internal structures. It can identify various medical conditions, assist healthcare providers during a procedure, and more.
According to the Mayo Clinic, ultrasounds are safe procedures that use low-power sound waves. An ultrasound scan is not like an x-ray.
What is the Procedure?
During pregnancy, an ultrasound views your uterus and ovaries. A sonographer or technician applies a gel to your abdomen.
Then, the technician rubs a wand-like instrument called a transducer through the gel. If you’re receiving a transvaginal ultrasound, the transducer is placed inside your vagina instead.
The transducer sends sound waves into your body that bounce back. These sound waves are converted into electrical signals, becoming images you can view on a computer screen. A technician typically performs an abdominal ultrasound after 7-8 weeks of pregnancy.
Why Do I Need an Ultrasound?
A missed period and a positive pregnancy test indicate the possibility of pregnancy, but an ultrasound confirms it. There is still more to know about your pregnancy; an ultrasound is the best way to get the information.
The following are the three most important things you learn from an ultrasound:
- How far along you are in your pregnancy.
The number of weeks you have been pregnant is called the gestational age. Knowing how far along you are is especially critical if you are considering an abortion. The FDA approves the drugs for the abortion pill method through 10 weeks of gestation only. - If the pregnancy is in the correct location or it is ectopic.
Although rare, an ectopic pregnancy means the pregnancy is growing in the wrong place, usually in the fallopian tubes. As it grows, it becomes a life-threatening health issue and must be treated immediately. - If the pregnancy is growing or you have had a miscarriage.
According to experts, as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. Most miscarriages happen early in pregnancy. It is possible to get a positive pregnancy test result days or weeks following a miscarriage. Ultrasound can determine if your pregnancy is growing by detecting a heartbeat.
