Only you know what’s best for your future. Although there is a loss with both of these options, abortion and adoption have very different outcomes. You need to learn as much as possible about each option before deciding.

What About Abortion?

Despite what you may have heard, abortion is a serious medical decision with physical and emotional risks. There are limitations to different procedures.

How far along you are in your pregnancy usually determines the type of procedure you have. Although we do not perform or refer for abortion, we can provide facts about the two types of abortion: medical and surgical.

Medical

A medical abortion uses drugs to end a pregnancy. It is also called a medication or chemical abortion or the abortion pill method. Generally, a woman takes two drugs: one to end the pregnancy and one to cause contractions to remove it from the body.

The FDA approves the use of these drugs only through 10 weeks of pregnancy. The farther along you are in your pregnancy, the less effective the drugs are.

Potential physical risks might be an incomplete abortion, heavy and prolonged bleeding, and infection. Some women report emotional side effects, too. The risk of negative mental health issues is possible for certain women.

Surgical

Surgical abortion procedures range from suction or vacuum aspiration in the early weeks to the addition of a sharp scraping tool or forceps in later weeks. Abortion providers perform surgical procedures in a clinic or hospital.

Often, the procedures require either general or local anesthesia and the dilation (opening) of your cervix, which leads to the uterus.

Possible risks may be a hole poked through the uterus with one of the surgical instruments, damage to your cervix, or infection. You may struggle emotionally, too.

What About Adoption?

Making an adoption plan for your child is not an easy decision. It is a loving choice but challenging because of that love. An expectant mother worries if her child will be cared for and safe. Will her child hate her because she chose to place them for adoption? Can a birth mother ever have peace about her decision?

These are valid questions. At True Women’s Center, we cannot place your child for adoption, but we can offer referrals to reputable, licensed adoption coordinators. They can answer your questions and thoroughly explain the adoption process.

Women choose adoption for many reasons. Her age, income, home life, and safety can all be why she feels incapable of raising her child. When an expectant mother or birth mom chooses adoption, she directs her child’s future. She can select the adoptive family based on her priorities for her child and decide how much contact she wants to have with the family.

Today, semi-open adoptions are the most popular. With this plan, the expectant mother selects the family and regularly communicates with them. However, a third party, such as an adoption agency or attorney, handles all communication. She stays in touch while maintaining privacy.
