Did you receive a positive pregnancy test result? Did you know this is only the first step in verifying your pregnancy? Ultrasound is the next step.

An ultrasound is a simple scan that uses sound waves to create a picture of your internal structures. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasounds are considered low-risk during pregnancy.

How Does Ultrasound Work?

Ultrasound uses a transducer (the wandlike part of the machine) to transmit sound waves through your body. During pregnancy, technicians use ultrasound to examine your uterus.

There are two types of ultrasound used during pregnancy: transvaginal and abdominal. Transvaginal ultrasound is invasive and involves gently inserting the transducer into the vagina. This type of ultrasound is used earlier in pregnancy because it provides a clearer picture.

Later in pregnancy, abdominal ultrasound is used. This noninvasive ultrasound involves moving the transducer along the abdomen.

What Can Ultrasound Reveal About My Pregnancy?

After receiving a positive pregnancy test result, an ultrasound verifies your pregnancy. This is because it’s possible to receive a positive pregnancy test result after miscarrying since hCG levels take a while to leave your body (and roughly 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage).

Ultrasound can also reveal the gestational age of your pregnancy, which can help determine your pregnancy options. For example, medical abortion is only FDA-approved if your pregnancy is under 10 weeks gestation.

Finally, an ultrasound can help determine the location of your pregnancy. Knowing the location is essential for confirming an ectopic pregnancy, which is when a pregnancy grows outside your uterus; this is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate medical intervention.

What to Expect During an Ultrasound Exam

During a limited ultrasound appointment, the ultrasound technician (person performing the ultrasound) will ensure you are comfortable before applying a jelly-like substance to your abdomen. This helps create a clearer image. (If you’re receiving a transvaginal ultrasound, the transducer will be placed inside your vagina instead).

The ultrasound technician will look for the pregnancy and take measurements, and you can see the pregnancy on the ultrasound screen. You will also be able to go home with pictures of your pregnancy if you desire.
