A regular menstrual cycle lasts between 26 and 32 days. Because some women have irregular cycles, which can even vary monthly, it is hard to detect when they are most likely to get pregnant. There are a few clues to look for, though. Learn more about ovulation and how your body changes when you’re most likely to get pregnant.

What Is Ovulation?

Ovulation refers to the release of an egg from an ovary. It usually happens around 12 to 16 days after the beginning of your last period. When an egg is released, it should travel down the fallopian tube to the uterus.

If fertilized, the egg implants in the uterus and begins growing. If not fertilized, the uterus lining sheds and the woman has her period. It is possible to fertilize the egg anywhere from 12 to 24 hours after it’s released.

Since sperm can live inside a woman’s body for 3 to 5 days after sex, the possibility of pregnancy is highest during those days around ovulation. Some doctors suggest you are most fertile from day 8 through day 19.

How Do I Know When I Ovulate?

The Mayo Clinic suggests watching for the following signs of ovulation:

  • Changes in the color and consistency of discharge from the vagina
  • Changes in body temperature (basal)
  • Some women may experience ovulation pain

It is possible to track your monthly cycle and ovulation. Here are a few different methods to track ovulation:

  • Apps that help you monitor your menstrual cycle. However, research suggests that period tracker apps may not be as reliable as presented.
  • Observing physical changes (vaginal discharge, physical pain, or basal body temperature)
  • Home ovulation test kits (these detect hormonal changes that occur right before ovulation)

Is There a “Safe Time” Not to Get Pregnant?

Because every woman’s cycle varies, predicting “safe days” is difficult. The first day of a woman’s period is the first day of her menstrual cycle for that month. Even if a woman has a relatively predictable monthly cycle, the timing of ovulation can change from month to month.

You are less likely to get pregnant during days 1 through 7 when you have your period. However, no one can predict for sure.
